Panther Press #3 - September 16, 2020

As I write this message on Wednesday morning, I am grateful that the sky is not choked with smoke, it is not 110 degrees outside, my internet connection is stable and strong, there are no national Zoom or Google outages, and my coffee is full-bodied and still warm. It was fascinating to listen to/watch the board meeting last night, as plans for re-opening are starting to take shape (but I must admit that I didn’t make it all the way to the end - it was way past my bedtime!) While it may still be premature to come back to school, it is never premature to plan for the return. Be on the lookout for direct communication from the district regarding future plans.

Without further ado, I present this week’s Panther Press...

New Announcements

Schedule/Calendar Change Reminder

Since Friday, October 2nd is a non-school day, we will NOT have the Common Learning Day (Monday Schedule) that week.  Monday, September 28th will be an EVEN Block Day (Weds/Fri Schedule.)  Remember: 2nd period starts at 9:40 on that day!
We did send a text message reminder regarding the schedule swap for this week.  If you didn’t receive it, login to your Parent Portal and double check that your cell phone numbers are correctly identified.  When logged in, look in your Family Information to verify.

LCMS Registration Closing Soon

Thank you to all of the families that have navigated our registration/donation page and made generous donations to our various Los Cerros programs.  If you would still like to participate, please visit our website registration page. Thanks!

Crazy Week-Panther Spirit Days!

Next week is a spirit week for Los Cerros staff and students. The leadership class has created the theme of Crazy Week.

TRRFCC - Students of the Week

Los Cerros staff members have been asked to submit names of students to be considered for TRRFCC Student of the Week.  This determination is based on demonstration of character as it relates to our Six Pillars - Trustworthiness, Responsibility, Respect, Fairness, Caring and Citizenship.  During remote learning, we continue to have high expectations for our students.
We are proud to announce that the following students have demonstrated Panther Pride by exemplifying the characteristic of Respect:

Baron Von Rosen-6th Grade

Maddie Roth- 6th Grade

Parker Swickard-7th Grade

Tarek Feeding-Aryan Pure-8th Grade

Congratulations Panthers!

Zoom/Google Meet/Online Etiquette

Teachers are reporting that for the most part, our students have been properly behaved, engaged, and completing assignments online. There are two areas in which we would love some support at home:
Please encourage your students to have their cameras on as much as possible. It is very difficult to form relationships and to assess engagement when teachers can’t see their students, especially when there are class discussions happening.  We know that there are many valid reasons why cameras are off during portions of synchronous learning, but we’d still love them to be on (as much as possible.)
Parents should never be logged in or engaged in Zoom/Meet sessions. Synchronous learning time should be students only. We know that our students need support, especially with tracking and completing assignments, but we ask that this support happen outside of class time.

School Loop Reminders

Starting this weekend, the parent School Loop email summaries will be turned back on. If you would like to receive them, you will need to login to School Loop, and at the top right of your Portal page, click the settings button.  Simply click the Receive Daily Emails button.  Voila! You are done!
We have noticed that some students did not use their Los Cerros/SRVUSD email addresses when setting up their School Loop accounts.  In order for the gradebook to “talk” to Google Classroom, they need to use this email address.  Teachers will be reminding students to do this, but it probably wouldn’t hurt if families add another reminder to do this.

Ongoing Announcements

Last Call for Read Woke Book Club

We're starting an LCMS Read Woke book club that focuses on books that challenge a social norm, give voice to the voiceless, provide information about a group that has been disenfranchised, seek to challenge the status quo, have a protagonist from an underrepresented or oppressed group. Woke:  “aware of and actively attentive to important facts and issues (especially issues of racial and social justice.)”
We would love for this to be a family experience, with both our students and parents participating.  Our first book will be Ghost Boys by Jewell Parker Rhodes. To keep our sense of community and to “shop local,” please consider reaching out to our local book store Rakestraw Books in Danville to order your copies.
If you are interested in reading to get WOKE and are interested in both virtual and eventually meeting at LCMS for in-person book club sessions please fill out this form!  We will reach out to all who express interest with dates and times for our meetings.
